Link Airways — seven years and counting at WOL

Link Airways has now been operating from Wollongong Airport longer than any previous passenger airline in the airport’s history — a milestone that reflects both the airline’s resilience and the strength of demand from Illawarra travellers. Region Illawarra recently profiled Jeff Boyd, Link Airways’ Network Strategy and Development Manager, who helped establish the airline’s Wollongong services and remains one of its most passionate advocates. Jeff started his aviation career at 17 as an apprentice at Bankstown Airport and has worked in the industry ever since. On the Wollongong route, he’s direct: “We’ll keep kicking along because we know we have a good product.” The airline operates a fleet of Saab 340B Plus aircraft on direct services to Melbourne and Brisbane, four days a week. Jeff notes the airport itself has improved significantly in recent years, with Federal and State government investment upgrading the terminal, resealing the runways and adding lights to the cross runway. COVID reduced frequencies and cut around 25 per cent of the airline’s Wollongong clientele, and the team is still working to rebuild that base. But with seven years of continuous service now under its belt, Link Airways holds a record no previous Illawarra airline has matched.
