Wollongong Airport’s runway lighting infrastructure is the result of a significant capital investment — a $20.35 million airport upgrade project completed in 2021 that delivered substantial improvements across the entire facility.
The upgrade included $350,000 specifically allocated to lighting for Runway 08/26, bringing the airport’s infrastructure up to a standard that supports a broader range of operations and positions WOL for future growth.
Night operations
While the runway lighting upgrade enables extended operational capability, night operations on Runway 08/26 remain subject to the airport’s Fly Neighbourly noise abatement procedures, which are in place to protect residents living near the flight path. Night training operations are directed to Runway 16/34, which provides a more suitable corridor for after-hours activity.
The Fly Neighbourly program reflects the airport’s commitment to being a good neighbour to the surrounding community while continuing to grow as the Illawarra’s primary aviation hub.
A platform for growth
The 2021 upgrade represents one of the most significant investments in the airport’s modern history, improving facilities for passengers, operators and the aviation businesses that call WOL home. The work has supported the continued growth of the airport precinct, which now includes commercial flights with Link Airways, HARS Aviation Museum, flight training schools, scenic flights, skydiving and a range of aviation support businesses.
